Manassas Court System & Jurisdictions

Manassas is an independent city in the state of Virginia, served by several judicial instances. Each of them handles certain categories of cases, and knowing the appropriate jurisdiction will help you immediately contact the necessary registry.

Circuit Court — is part of the 31st Judicial Circuit of Virginia and currently has seven full-time judges. It handles:

  • Felonies
  • Civil claims over $25,000
  • Divorce, custody, and family law cases
  • Probate cases
  • Appeals from General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court

General District Court deals with another array of cases — and this is where most people end up.

  • Traffic violations and misdemeanors
  • Civil claims up to $25,000
  • Preliminary hearings in criminal cases
  • Eviction and unpaid rent cases

Cases involving juveniles, domestic violence, alimony, and protective orders are handled by a separate Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. Small claims cases up to $5,000 are filed through the General District Court.

How to Get a Copy of a Manassas Court Document

Copies of court documents come in two types: certified — with an official seal and clerk's signature, and uncertified — regular photocopies. A certified copy is required for most legal procedures: filing in another court, immigration applications, or divorce confirmation.

Online. Some records — including land documents and basic case information — can be viewed through the online records access system of the Circuit Court Clerk's Office. Downloading a certified copy online is usually not possible — you need to apply in person or by mail for this.
